Caring for Your Flowers
It is always a lovely surprise when receiving flowers for a special occasion. To make sure you are getting the most out of your gift, there are a few steps to keep your flowers lasting longer.
Flowers last an average of 5 to 14 days depending on the type of flowers, climate and where the flowers are placed in your home. Sunlight, drafts and temperature all contribute to the longevity and life span of your flowers.
Here are some tips on how to keep your flowers lasting to their full capacity:
When you first get your flowers, it is important to make sure the ends receive a fresh cut, especially if they are not already in water. Cut the stems on a 45-degree angle and pick off any leaves that come into contact with water. These leaves start to decompose in the water and affect the life of your flowers.
To keep your flowers lasting, we suggest changing and cleaning the vase of water every 2-3 days. We highly suggest using cold water from your fridge or even adding ice cubes in the water to keep the water nice and cool. The cooler the water and environment the flowers are in the longer they take to open and the longer they last.
If you receive your flowers in a boxed arrangement with floral foam, please peel back the cellophane to expose to the base of where the flowers are inserted. Stick your finger into the foam to see if the brick is dry or wet. If your finger is damp, you must fill up the box with water so that you can see water just above the brick. Do not overfill so that the box becomes com promised. The box should be heavy but not over-flowing with water.
Flowers will live longer if you avoid placing them in direct sunlight, heat, on top of appliances such as heaters, fireplace as they can precipitately wilt cut flowers.
Further to avoid wilting, make sure you place them away from fruits as some fruits discharge ethylene gas which can prematurely age flowers.
